GFW was built to prevent Chinese citizens from accessing information on internet freely. Probably west hasn’t get to know its whole picture.

Charlie Cai, a real China will surprise nobody
No one would be able to predict when the GFW will gone. Regardless of how long you guess, it will exist long enough exceed expectation. However, like the real Great Wall, the real question is will it work well in the near future?
GFW was built to prevent Chinese citizens from accessing information on internet freely. Probably west hasn’t get to know its whole picture. Actually, the majority of foreign language website are free to surf. The websites being blocked are ones that reveal negative information about CCP and whose mainly users are Chinese. CCP don’t pay attention to CNN or FOX News since native Chinese are barely know English, not to mention they can understand. If you stay in China mainland, you will will find it cannot login Facebook, Twitter and Google. Why? because all of them provide multi-language which includes Chinese language. In other words, Chinese will register as users and explore out of government control that is unacceptable to CCP.
Back to the question, if GFW will disappear or at least disable. Sadly, I cannot foresee this could happen only if CCP are in charge of China. Worse, Chinese are get used to living in this kind of local internet which is big enough to supply all kind of functionalities. For instance, there is Weibo which is same as Twitter, Renren which is same as Facebook. And then of course, Weixin fulfill our social life in all aspects.
In addition, some western websites and social medias are not friendly. Debates happen frequently between Chinese and west on popular social websites. If one day GFW removed, maybe you will see Chinese is everywhere on internet. Ironically, that will also become a threat in eyes of some western people. So maintain the status quo is not a bad idea.
