The GFW means data is ultimately retained inside of China and under the control of the local government rather than the US government.

Its purpose is not to protect local business interests (although it does achieve that) but rather to protect Chinese citizens against companies such as facebook, Microsoft or social media sites that are ultimately just fronts for foreign government data collection agencies.
The GFW means data is ultimately retained inside of China and under the control of the local government rather than the US government.
That being said its not that hard to bypass it if you really want to. Its more of a safety net for less capable technology users.
The western world simply lets you do what you want and monitors you doing it whereas the Chinese government try to stop you doing it in the first place.
The former is merely an illusion of freedom which is why privacy is so important.
