Five Food Ingredients That Damage Your Brain
Most of the ingredients in processed foods aren’t good for your health. Some can even damage your brain.
The worst part is that these ingredients can ruin your health even when taken for a short period. So try to avoid them as much as possible. Here are 5 ingredients that may affect your brain function.
1. Artificial sweeteners
There so many artificial sweeteners out there. The common ones include aspartame (aminosweet), saccharin (Equal Sweet N Low), or sucralose (splenda). Well, don’t be fooled by the fact that they’re advertised as zero-calorie ingredients.
Research shows that aspartame contains chemicals that ruin brain function and cause brain-related problems like depression, migraines, memory loss and so on.
Foods with artificial sweeteners include; yogurt, flavored water, cereal, sodas, cooking sauces, chewing gum, sugar-free products, and tabletop sweeteners.
2. Gluten
Gluten is found in rye, wheat, kamut, spelt, and, barley. This common ingredient is known to weaken immune system and cause digestive problems. It can cause inflammation in the brain for people with gluten intolerance.
Research shows there’s a link between gluten sensitivity and brain function. It has been proven that gluten can trigger dementia and cognitive impairment.
3. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
Not only does this chemical lower testosterone levels, it can also affect your brain. MSG causes the brain to produce excess dopamine with side effects. These side effects can cause conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and lupus.
MSG is commonly found in salad dressings, barbecue sauce, canned veggies and soup, and bouillon cubes.
4. Fluoride
Research shows that children raised in high-fluoride areas have lower IQ. Studies have also linked fluoride to memory impairment and fetal brain damage. Avoid using products with fluoride. Avoid drinking unpurified tap water as well.
5. Refined sugar
Refined sugar is found in over 70 percent of processed foods. And it can weaken your memory because it suppresses growth hormone (brain derived neurotrophic factor) for the brain. It has also been linked to brain fog, depression, and bad mood.
