Kingdom Council Of Ministers: “Elections In Curaçao Should Continue On April 28”
THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The Kingdom Council of Ministers, on a proposal presented by Minister Ronald Plasterk of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, decided to seek urgent advice from the Council of State of the Kingdom on the measures needed to ensure that the elections for the Parliament of Curaçao can take place on April 28, 2017 in an orderly manner.
With an Order of Higher Supervision, it is proposed to place all the authority for the organization of the elections of April 28 on the Governor of Curaçao. The measure also states that the Governor can use all the government services to organize and hold the elections.
“It is of utmost importance that the people of Curaçao can decide on the future of the country in free and fair elections. During these last days, the integrity of the electoral process has been seriously undermined through the actions of the interim government. Therefore, the Kingdom Council of Ministers considers it necessary to give the Governor the authority to ensure the orderly conduct of the elections.”
The Kingdom Council of Ministers further noted that the draft national decree of the interim government of Curacao to cancel the elections is contrary to the legal certainty and good governance. The Governor has not ratified that draft.
