Dutch Parliament Ask Questions About “War That Almost Happened” With Venezuela

hugo-carvajal-nicolas-maduro-10_655x438THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – The Dutch Member of Parliament for D66, Sjoerd Sjoerdsma wants clarification from the government in the conflict with Venezuela last summer. Immediately after the accident of the MH17 there was almost a military conflict when the Venezuelan senior official, Hugo Carvajal, former head of military intelligence, who was arrested in Aruba. This was done at the request of the US, where he is suspected of drug trafficking.
According to Venezuela, Carvajal had diplomatic immunity. To support their argument, the country sent naval ships to the Aruban waters, and the island was threatened with economic sanctions. Prime Minister Mark Rutte ordered then Minister of Foreign Affairs Timmermans to release Carvajal.
Sjoerdsma read a reconstruction of the conflict in the local newspaper AD.  “On my previous questions the government said that there was no military threat, but it now seems strongly that that was and that the Netherlands has sought an excuse to let Carvajal go. That’s when the Netherlands torpedoed justice. I seriously wonder whether the cabinet has dealt with this crisis the right way.” Louis Bontes of VNL agrees with Sjoerdsma. “Rutte had just helped a drug smuggler escape.”
A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives has long been worried about the threat posed by Venezuela to the ABC islands.
